“Doctor, admit me in this hospital. I’m unable to sleep,” a women pleaded at midnight amidst Cyclone Remal in Guwahati. A battle against sleep apnea.

Last night a sense of urgency filled the air as a new patient was admitted. She was battling a silent yet severe disease called sleep apnea, a condition that causes her oxygen levels to drop dangerously low during sleep. Her lifeline, a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, helps maintain her oxygen levels through the night, ensuring she breathes properly and stays alive.

However, the arrival of Cyclone Remal in Guwahati city recently brought with it more than just heavy winds and torrential rain. The storm wreaked havoc on the power lines, plunging the city into darkness. The power outage meant that her CPAP machine was rendered useless, putting her life at immediate risk. In a desperate bid to survive, she was brought to a Hospital where backup generators ensured continuous power supply for critical medical equipment.

As the cyclone raged outside, the hospital staff worked tirelessly to provide the necessary care. The patient was settled into a bed, and her CPAP machine was hooked up to the hospital’s power system. The doctors and nurses monitored her condition closely, knowing that any interruption in power could have dire consequences.
The storm raged through the night, a fierce reminder of nature’s unpredictability and power. Yet inside the hospital, amidst the whirring of machines and the beeping of monitors, there was a sense of calm and determination. The patient, although terrified by the events, found solace in the relentless dedication of the medical staff. They were her lifeline, ensuring that even as the world outside seemed to be falling apart, she was safe.

The night passed slowly, each hour marked by the howl of the wind and the steady hum of the generators. Morning brought a sense of relief as the worst of the cyclone passed and power began to be restored across the city. The patient, now out of immediate danger, expressed her profound gratitude to the hospital staff who had ensured her survival through the terrifying ordeal.

“The aftermath of the cyclone left the city reeling, underscoring how precarious life becomes without electricity,” Dr Nazimul, a doctor who helped to treat the patient successfully told Fourline Journal. “This particular case demonstrated the healthcare experts' tenacity and unyielding spirit in the face of nature's unpredictability,” he added.

Life during a power outage, especially for those reliant on medical equipment, is fraught with challenges and fear.
